The new Mosaic Lounge, located on the second floor of Schewel, promotes an environment that allows students to engage with one another.

The Mosaic Lounge was initially located on the second floor of Drysdale, formerly called Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI). Despite the reservations about the room relocation, affinity groups are confident that this new space will be the best environment to shelter creativity, and to host events for students.

In its first year, the Mosaic Lounge aims to play a larger role in developing a sense of community among university students. Alexis Scott, the assistant director of Student Diversity initiatives, said that “she wants students to feel that this space is a nice environment to hangout, study, unwind, or play video games.”

Michael Vaughan, assistant vice president of Operations, said, "the lounge is a larger room than its prior space.

This location has seen an increase in student engagement compared to its previous position. Josiah Randles, the president of the Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA), said “that seeing new students has been a beneficial thing because each student brings a fresh personality into the community.”

“More students now have access to this area, and it is not only used by affinity groups but other organizations and clubs are now utilizing this space,” said Randles.

Scott went on to indicate that "keeping The Mosaic Lounge in Schewel is not ideal, but I would like to maintain and develop the space."

When creating the lounge, she collected feedback from the students in the affinity groups on what décor and furniture would make the room appear prettier and more relaxing.

With an increasing dedication to building community, the space continues to become a welcome environment for students. The lounge is still being renovated because nothing has been finalized yet but Scott said, “she seeks student’s feedback to determine what they want to see in the space.”
